I always thought newspapering lends itself well to charts, graphs and tables...So when Jude's Internet piece on political donations made it into print today, I perused the donations our three Congressional candidates have given to others....
Democrat Bill Owens donating to Al D'Amato and George Pataki (does June know about that), as well as GOP Assemblyman turned convicted sex fiend Chris Ortloff, but Mr. Owens also gave to unconvicted sex enthusiast Eliot Spitzer.
. Matt Doheny is heavily invested ($9500) in Patty Ritchie, gave $2400 to now Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), gave to various county committees and the Club for Growth (could be why they aren't backing Hoffman this year) , $4000 to the Oneida County Independence Party (money well spent), gave to a bunch of people I never heard of, and gave that pesky $2400 to DeDe. No donations to SarahPAC are noted.
Doug Hoffman donated the least of the three unless you count those loans to his own campaign that pay interest.
Its good to see the Times delving into donations again...They had gotten out of the habit in recent years.
Watertown Daily Times Doheny outdoes rivals in donating

Jude breaks down the donations a little further here, to include Doug Hoffman's thirteen contributions, which totalled $1675 and is sixteen times more than Owens $100 donation, to "convicted sex fiend Chris Ortloff.
Interesting. More than 80% of Hoffman's political donations over the past decade were to Ortloff. Is he friends with him or something? I am not trying to throw stones, but I am just curious. For a guy that doesn't donate much to political campaigns, it seems like a lot. There were 13 separate donations to him over a 6 year period, when he only made 17 political donations in total. I just find it interesting.
From WDT
Douglas L. Hoffman
Thirteen contributions to Friends of Chris Ortloff, totaling $1,675, August 2000 to March 2006.
Now does Hoffman really want to continue his holier than tho attack on Doheny for contributing to Dede?
Riddle me this Batman!
If Doheny contributing to Dede makes him a liberal, then what does Hoffman contributing to Ortloff make Hoffman? Fill in the blank ______!
Just goes to show you how stupid Hoffman is for attempting to make the leap here.
It's very interesting that the mayor uses his blog post to purposefully connect Representative Owens to the assemblyman, via his $100 contribution, but conveniently omits mention of Doug Hoffman's $1675 in donations to the "sex fiend Chris Ortloff".
What blatantly unfair commentary and spin from the self-described "conservative" talk show host and oft-described last term mayor. Please continue to espouse more about the main stream media, that you so often cite, and their political bias while we further laugh at your hypocrisy.
“I contribute more than you.” “No you don't, I contribute more.” “He/she contributed less.” So, it goes, child play, really.
As for me, “Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn,” (swiped quip from Rhett Butler). It’s not how much they contribute to others pols, it’s how much they rake in from other pols and fat cats that is and should be the #1 issue in every campaign, but it seldom is.
My rule is simple and I’m constantly laughed at: “Do not take money from folks who can't vote for you.”
That is a darn policy to hold and a very strong principle. These three happen to be millionaires but still need money from VA, CA, FL, or Wall Street? Give me a break. Any money from outside the district, outside of NYS, or from the well-known big interests on K Street in DC is the issue. What is expected in return for all that money ($3 billion in 2008 cycle alone)? Oh, I don't know: how about favors, special access, cleverly written bills that no one reads before they vote on them, or lobbyists helping draft legislation that they want for starters.
Candidates will profess never to do that.
Incumbents swear they don't, or when they do (which all the time), they say it helps you back home.
Both are flat out wrong and liars.
My principle would work, (but) we have to try it first. Meanwhile, watch from the sidelines with me.
How about doing a piece (with breakdowns) on campaign donations received by all congressional, senate, and assembly candidates.Only seems fair.
What is interesting Mr. Mayor, didn't you support Mrs. Ritchie in the past?
I don't think that's true...I will look at my check stubs...I did contribute to Hillary's campaign in 2008...
Dan,
It makes complete ethical sense to accept donations from people outside your constituency, as long as radical pieces of shit like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have the power to drastically and disproportionately affect the lives of Americans outside of their constituency
Compared to Sheldon Silver, Pelosi and Reid are powerless and moderate.
